Gerontology Care Assistant (ASG): What is their role with older adults?

By DIATTA Nestor Ambroise · Published on 22 October 2026

What is an ASG?

The role of Gerontology Care Assistant was created to enhance the support provided to people living with Alzheimer's disease or related conditions. Following specialised training, it is open to professionals already dedicated to caring for older adults, such as care assistants.

What are their responsibilities?

  • Support the person with daily living activities, while preserving their independence.
  • Offer tailored stimulation activities.
  • Adapt communication to the person's cognitive difficulties.
  • Identify and report changes in behaviour.
  • Support loved ones and family carers.

What does an ASG not do?

The ASG works strictly within their scope of practice: they do not make medical diagnoses, do not prescribe, and do not carry out clinical procedures reserved for other healthcare professions. They work in coordination with other professionals.
