Montessori-inspired activities for older adults: principles and simple examples

By DIATTA Nestor Ambroise · Published on 22 October 2026

What are the principles of the Montessori approach?

Derived from Maria Montessori's pedagogy, this approach has been adapted for supporting older adults. It places the emphasis on:
- respecting the person's pace and choices;

- activities that have meaning and purpose;

- a prepared environment, with clear cues;

- success : the activity is designed so that the person can complete it successfully.

What are some examples of simple activities?

  • Sorting objects by colour or shape (buttons, cutlery, clothes pegs).
  • Folding laundry or towels.
  • Watering plants, repotting a flower.
  • Preparing a simple recipe following illustrated steps.
  • Matching pictures with words.

What precautions should be taken?

It is important to avoid setting the person up to fail : we simplify the activity if necessary, demonstrate rather than explain, and express appreciation for their participation. We also ensure safety (non-hazardous items, comfortable posture).

How does GéroStim-Expertise use these approaches?

Montessori inspirations form part of the 'autonomy and mobility' component of the home-based PASA workshop, alongside fine motor skills, tailored activities and sensory stimulation.
