What is the purpose of a gerontological evaluation?
Before offering workshops, it is essential to get to know the person: what they enjoy, what they still do independently, what they find challenging, what brings them comfort. The evaluation lays these foundations and sets realistic goals.
It replaces neither a medical check-up nor a diagnosis made by a doctor.
How is it carried out?
The evaluation takes place at home, in a familiar setting. I speak with the person and, if they wish, with their loved ones. I observe their routines, behaviours and environment: moving around the home, points of reference, everyday objects.
How to prepare for it?
A few simple steps can help:
- choose a time of day when the person is usually feeling at their best ;
- let the person know about the visit, using simple words ;
- think about their interests, life history, and routines ;
- note down everyday situations that raise questions.
There is no need to prepare medical records: the evaluation is not concerned with a diagnosis.
What happens after the evaluation?
I prepare a recommendations report for the agency and authorised loved ones, accompanied by a schedule of tailored workshops. This forms the basis of the personalised programme.
