Reminiscence: rekindling memories to foster communication

By DIATTA Nestor Ambroise · Published on 22 October 2026

Why focus on past memories?

For many people living with memory difficulties, distant memories remain far more accessible than recent events. Drawing upon them helps celebrate what the person still recalls, rather than confronting them with what has been forgotten.

What prompts can be used?

  • Photographs of family members or familiar places.
  • Vintage objects : tools, everyday utensils, postcards.
  • Songs and music from their youth.
  • Familiar recipes, scents, and textures.

How does a session take place?

We choose a prompt, allow the person to take it in, and gently invite them to share, without quizzing them as if in an exam. What matters most is the conversation and the shared emotion, not the precise accuracy of dates or names.

Some memories can be painful: we remain sensitive and change the subject whenever necessary.

How is reminiscence integrated at GéroStim-Expertise?

Reminiscence forms part of the 'cognitive stimulation' component of the home-based PASA workshop, alongside memory exercises, tailored games, and communication practice.

Frequently asked questions

Can family members get involved?
Relatives can help by providing photographs or personal objects and by sharing details of the person's life history, which serve as wonderful prompts.
What happens if a memory brings up sadness?
We acknowledge the emotion calmly, without dismissing it, and then gently introduce another, more comforting prompt.
